It's worse with other brands. There are lots of card models that used
be supported by wi(4) but newer versions of the card use the TI chip
without *any* change in the product name ...
Hmmm... I was just about to order a new Netgear MA401 card because I've
heard around here that it's compatible with FreeBSD. Does anyone know
if the MA401 still has the same good-ol' compatible (Prism?) chipset?

I think so. I own a ma401 myself that is a month old (retail) which is
prism2, and I doubt Netgear would change chips without changing the
model number as they did with the wired equivelents fa310 (dec/tulip) ->
fa311 (sis).
